Scutellaria baicalensis, Baikal skullcap (Huang qin) has been used for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunoprotective, anticancer, antimicrobial, antiviral, and circulatory conditions.
Glycyrrhiza glabra, Licorice Root is a broad-spectrum antiviral that either inhibit a virus from entering cells, directly kills a virus through a variety of mechanisms (e.g., stops replication, inhibits growth) or stimulates the immune system to attack a virus. Its primary antiviral constituent is glycyrrhizin, which is 50 times sweeter than sugar and gives licorice its sweet taste. Licorice is an effective antiviral for a long list of viruses which include several strains of influenza, respiratory viral infections, pneumonia, encephalitis, herpes simplex, and hepatitis. It also has some antibacterial action.
Sambucus nigra L. ssp. canadensis, Elder Leaf Decoction: Elder Leaf, Elderflower and elderberry are both exceptional allies during colds, flu, and respiratory infections due to their diaphoretic and antiviral actions. Taken as a hot tea (or tincture), elderflowers move energy and qi outward by stimulating circulation and promoting sweating, removing toxins from the body and reducing fever after its work of killing pathogens is done. Elderflower is also anti-inflammatory, anti-catarrhal and expectorant, and helps in cases of colds, sinusitis, and sinus allergies to reduce inflammation of sinus tissue and allow for the movement of congestion. Research reviewed by Ulbricht et al. (2014) suggests that “herbal preparations containing elder may result in less swelling of mucus membranes, better drainage, milder headache, and decreased nasal congestion.” Elderberry is also effective for coughs and congestion associated with lower respiratory viral infections, promoting expectoration of mucus associated with bronchial infections. The CG’s are evaporated from the Elder Leaf after 30 minutes of boiling (decoction) by Buhner. My Elder Leaf decoction came to a boiling point and then simmered for an hour.
Lonicera japonica, Japanese Honeysuckle has Antibacterial, Antibiotic, Antiseptic, Astringent, Expectorant, and Immune Stimulate actions, just to name a few! In TCM, honeysuckle is used specifically for a Wei fever—a wind-heat condition or surface fever/disease that affects the lung and stomach heart and spleen organs and meridians (Tierra, 1988; Reid, 1995). Honeysuckle’s antibiotic compounds are increasingly being studied in recent scientific forays (Han et al., 2014; Yang et al., 2017).
