How to Start Plants from Cuttings
The best starting mix for starting plant cuttings is:
- Perlite, Vermiculite, sand with a combination of Peat moss. Rich topsoil or soil from the compost bin works well too. The mixture should be loose, well-draining, and have plenty of oxygen movement for newly forming roots; NOT packed.
How to Root Cuttings
You can plant the cutting in pots or a tray.
- The container should be deep enough to support the new root depth. Plant the cutting with the cut end buried in premoistened media by 1 to 1 ½ inches.
- It is important to plant the correct end. The buds and leaves will point up toward the sky, plant the opposite end.
Place a plastic bag over the container and indirectly lit the area. You will be making a mini-greenhouse effect.
- Protect the cuttings from frost.
- Open the bag daily to encourage air circulation and water.
- Do NOT let it dry out.
- Check for roots in two weeks. Some plants will be ready and others will take a month or more. Repot or transfer to the ground when the root system is well established.
Grow out in a shaded place in pots for a year before transplanting to the final location. When moved to the plant’s permanent home, add topsoil in the hole surrounding the root system. Mulch heavily 2-4”. Water well and thereafter when it does NOT rain for the first summer.
