All Organic: Mullein Flowers Verbascum thapsus, Garlic, Olive oil
Suggested Use: Warm the oil to comfort. Place 3-4 drops of oil in the ear every 30 mins or as needed.
The oil infusion of flowers is commonly used as an ear infection remedy and to soothe earaches. A 2003 double-blind trial compared the use of an olive-oil based herbal ear drops that included mullein (along with oats, calendula, St. John’s wort, lavender, and vitamin E) with the use of anesthetic ear drops, with or without a systemic antibiotic. One hundred seventy-one children with middle-ear infections were assessed over three days. While all groups showed improvement, those children given the herbal drops without the antibiotics had a better response, leading researchers to state that since antibiotics did not improve treatment outcome, the focus on treatment should be to alleviate pain. In addition, “…these herbal extracts have the potential to meet all of the requirements of appropriate medication that could be routinely used in the pediatric patient, namely in vitro bacteriostatic and bacteriocidal activity against common pathogens, immunostimulation ability, antioxidant activity, and anti-inflammatory effects. They are also well-absorbed with good penetration into the tissue surrounding the tympanic membrane” Sarrell EM, Cohen HA, Kahan E. (2003). Naturopathic treatment for ear pain in children.
