Boneset Tea:
Used with an active infection, only. Boneset has come back into the light since COVID-19 showed up. An ancient remedy for chest congestion and immune support with anti-viral properties. Native Americans used it for malaria. Not a pleasant tea but a medicinal tea. This tea should only be taken with active chest congestion or infection. Up to 6 times a day and no more than one week at a time.
Suggested Use: 8 oz of boiled water to 1tsp of Boneset tea. Steep for 5 mins.
Eupatorium Perfoliatum is also used to help manage influenza, swine flu, acute bronchitis, nasal inflammation, joint pain (rheumatism), fluid retention, dengue fever, and pneumonia; as a stimulant; and to cause sweating. European studies show that Boneset helps with viral and bacterial infections by stimulating white blood cells. (Habtemariam, S. and Macpherson, A. M. Cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity of ethanol extract from leaves of a herbal drug, boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum). Phytother Res  2000;14(7):575-577). Boneset is used to support the immune system’s response to a person who is fighting an infection, auto-immune condition, and a fever reducer. CAUTION: All medicinal herbs have the power to do good also have the potential to do harm. Boneset needs to be drunk hot (for fever), in small doses, for no more than ONE WEEK.
NOTE: The American Herbal Pharmacopoeia samples of boneset and found that it contains low levels of potentially toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), specifically the alkaloids intermedine and lycopsamine. Until further testing, we recommend avoiding the internal use of boneset in pregnancy and nursing. Additionally, children under twelve years of age and those with known liver disease should avoid internal use. Others who wish to ingest boneset internally (after researching the potential of PA toxicity on the liver) should limit the internal use to no more than one week, and preferably ingest the herb in a formula with other herbs (to limit the dosage).
