Kit 3: Anti-Viral Tinctures with Boneset Tea
This kit contains Formula 1 & 2 Tinctures with the Boneset Tea.
Promotes an active immune system to prepare for certain viruses and supports the immune system during acute viral infections.
Formula #1: Ultimate Defense + Plus
Taken as a preventive and during an acute infection.
Scutellaria baicalensis, Baikal skullcap (Huang qin) has been used for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunoprotective, anticancer, antimicrobial, antiviral, and circulatory conditions.
Glycyrrhiza glabra, Licorice Root is a broad-spectrum antiviral that either inhibit a virus from entering cells, directly kills a virus through a variety of mechanisms (e.g., stops replication, inhibits growth), or stimulates the immune system to attack a virus. Its primary antiviral constituent is glycyrrhizin, which is 50 times sweeter than sugar and gives licorice its sweet taste. Licorice is an effective antiviral for a long list of viruses which include several strains of influenza, respiratory viral infections, pneumonia, encephalitis, herpes simplex, and hepatitis. It also has some antibacterial action.
Sambucus nigra L. ssp. canadensis, Elder Leaf Decoction: Elder Leaf, Elderflower, and elderberry are both exceptional allies during colds, flu, and respiratory infections due to their diaphoretic and antiviral actions. Taken as a hot tea (or tincture), elderflowers move energy and qi outward by stimulating circulation and promoting sweating, removing toxins from the body and reducing fever after its work of killing pathogens is done. Elderflower is also anti-inflammatory, anti-catarrhal and expectorant, and helps in cases of colds, sinusitis, and sinus allergies to reduce inflammation of sinus tissue and allow for the movement of congestion. Research reviewed by Ulbricht et al. (2014) suggests that “herbal preparations containing elder may result in less swelling of mucus membranes, better drainage, milder headache, and decreased nasal congestion.” Elderberry is also effective for coughs and congestion associated with lower respiratory viral infections, promoting expectoration of mucus associated with bronchial infections. The CG’s are evaporated from the Elder Leaf after 30 minutes of boiling (decoction) by Buhner. My Elder Leaf decoction came to a boiling point and then simmered for an hour.
Lonicera japonica, Japanese Honeysuckle has Antibacterial, Antibiotic, Antiseptic, Astringent, Expectorant, and Immune Stimulate actions, just to name a few! In TCM, honeysuckle is used specifically for a Wei fever—a wind-heat condition or surface fever/disease that affects the lung and stomach heart and spleen organs, and meridians (Tierra, 1988; Reid, 1995). Honeysuckle’s antibiotic compounds are increasingly being studied in recent scientific forays (Han et al., 2014; Yang et al., 2017).
Formula #2: Immune + Lymph Support: Anti-Inflammatory
Taken as a preventive and during an acute infection.
Ganoderma lucidum, Reishi Mushroom at one time, reishi was used exclusively by royalty as a “superior herb” in ancient China, and today is used as an immunomodulant, adaptogen, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, hypocholesterolemic, liver protective, nervine, and antiviral (Winston and Maimes, 2007).
Angelica sinensis, Dong Quai is used to strengthen the heart, lung, and liver meridians, while harmonizing the blood. In formulas, such as this blend, it is used with astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus). It also has broader indications for supporting the cardiovascular (Romm, 2010), respiratory (Barnes et al., 2010).
Ceanothus americanus, Red Root (New Jersey Tea) was used by the North American Indians to manage fevers and problems of the mucous membranes such as catarrh and sore throats. Modern-day usage of the roots concentrates on their astringent, expectorant, and antispasmodic actions, and they are employed to serve situations such as asthma, bronchitis, and coughs. The roots and root-bark are antispasmodic, antisyphilitic, strongly astringent, expectorant, hemostatic, and sedative. They have a stimulatory effect on the lymphatic system. The plant is used internally when someone dealing with bronchial complaints including asthma and whooping cough, dysentery, sore throats, and tonsillitis.
Cinnamomum cassia, Cinnamon was used as a food preservative because of its ability to kill foodborne pathogens. In this formula, we used Cinnamon for its antimicrobial actions. Also is an antifungal, antiviral, antioxidant, antitumoral, blood pressure-lowering, cholesterol and lipid-lowering, and gastroprotective properties.
Boneset Tea:
Used with an active infection.
Eupatorium Perfoliatum is also used to help manage influenza, swine flu, acute bronchitis, nasal inflammation, joint pain (rheumatism), fluid retention, dengue fever, and pneumonia; as a stimulant; and to cause sweating. European studies show that Boneset helps with viral and bacterial infections by stimulating white blood cells. (Habtemariam, S. and Macpherson, A. M. Cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity of ethanol extract from leaves of a herbal drug, boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum). Phytother Res 2000;14(7):575-577). Boneset is used to support the immune system’s response to a person who is fighting an infection, auto-immune condition, and a fever reducer. CAUTION: All medicinal herbs have the power to do good also have the potential to do harm. Boneset needs to be drunk hot (for fever), in small doses, for no more than ONE WEEKS.
NOTE: The American Herbal Pharmacopoeia samples of boneset and found that it contains low levels of potentially toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), specifically the alkaloids intermedine and lycopsamine. Until further testing, we recommend avoiding the internal use of boneset in pregnancy and nursing. Additionally, children under twelve years of age and those with known liver disease should avoid internal use. Others who wish to ingest boneset internally (after researching the potential of PA toxicity on the liver) should limit the internal use to no more than one week, and preferably ingest the herb in a formula with other herbs (to limit the dosage).
